Background of the Study
Cyber espionage refers to the unauthorized access and exfiltration of sensitive information, often carried out by state-sponsored actors, cybercriminals, or competitors (Nwafor & Aliyu, 2024). Higher education institutions, including Federal University, Wukari, store valuable research data, administrative records, and confidential communications, making them prime targets for cyber espionage.
Cyber espionage attacks exploit weak security protocols, phishing, malware, and insider threats to infiltrate institutional networks (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). Nigerian universities often lack advanced threat detection systems, increasing their vulnerability to data breaches. Given the rise in cyber threats globally, it is crucial to investigate cyber espionage risks within Federal University, Wukari, to develop effective countermeasures.
This study will assess the cyber espionage threats facing the university, identify security loopholes, and propose strategies for mitigating potential attacks.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Wukari, has reported cases of unauthorized data access, potential phishing attempts, and suspicious network activities, raising concerns about cyber espionage. The lack of comprehensive threat intelligence and incident response mechanisms exposes the institution to data theft and reputational damage.
This study aims to investigate cyber espionage risks in the university, evaluate the effectiveness of existing security measures, and recommend strategies to strengthen institutional cybersecurity.
Objectives of the Study
To identify the potential cyber espionage threats in Federal University, Wukari.
To evaluate the university’s cybersecurity measures in preventing espionage attacks.
To propose strategies for mitigating cyber espionage risks in the institution.
Research Questions
What are the key cyber espionage threats faced by Federal University, Wukari?
How effective are the university’s existing security measures in preventing espionage attacks?
What strategies can be implemented to mitigate cyber espionage risks?
Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into cyber espionage risks in Nigerian universities, helping institutions enhance their cybersecurity frameworks. The findings will benefit IT administrators, policymakers, and security professionals in mitigating cyber threats.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating cyber espionage risks in Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. It does not cover other cyber threats such as ransomware or financial fraud.
